The Sahrawi Republic – A Reflection on Recent Developments

The United Nations Secretary-General’s envoy for Western Sahara, Horst Köhler, wrapped up the first of the round table talks over the future of Western Sahara on December 6, 2018. The former German president noted the talks “a first, but an important, step” toward resolving decades-old standoff between Morocco and the Polisario Front. The South African government, a supporter of Western Sahara, currently occupies a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from 2019 – 2020 welcomed the two- day UN talks in Geneva. In addition, the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was extended by the UNSC for another six months in order to continue pressing the parties to negotiate directly and without conditions to find a lasting solution. As the next round table talks will take place by the end of March 2019, it is an appropriate time to reflect on recent developments on the road to the long awaited Referendum.
