South Africa and the DRC concluded a General Cooperation Agreement in 2004 to promote political‚ economic and social cooperation between the two countries. Cabinet approved the ratification of the Grand Inga Treaty with the DRC in August 2014.
The treaty allows for South Africa to buy over half of the power generated by the first phase of the world’s biggest hydroelectric project‚ aimed at generating 40‚000 megawatt of power on the Congo River.
South Africa agreed to buy 2‚500MW of electricity in the first phase under the treaty‚ which was signed in October 2013 before being tabled in Parliament.
