The global South now contributes more than half of global production and 40 per cent of world trade, with intraregional trade within the South accounting for more than a quarter of global trade. The South also holds almost twice the foreign exchange reserves of developed economies.
Asia is the epicenter of SSC, with some very dynamic economies playing key roles. Leading the rise of the South, this region has catalyzed an unprecedented shift in global dynamics, which has shaped SSC.
