The Government of South Africa expresses solidarity with Vanuatu

South Africa has noted the comments by President Baldwin Lonsdale that climate change had contributed to the disaster. Being one of the Least Developed Countries and with two-thirds of people depending on agriculture, fishing and tourism for their livelihood, South Africa is committed to supporting countries such as Vanuatu in their efforts to reinforce a greater appreciation of the vulnerabilities of developing countries to climate change.

South Africa stands ready to assist in whatever way possible to bring relief to Vanuatu and its people. The South African Government commends the work already underway by governments, international organisations and aid agencies to assess the situation in the affected areas, make contact with areas whose communication systems have been destroyed and render humanitarian and other assistance.
