I am writing to inform you of the opening of applications for the 2015/2016 Chevening Scholarships Programme for Future Leaders. We would welcome applications from within your institution from those with potential to be future leaders.

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The Scholarships offer the opportunity to study for a one-year Master’s degree at any of the UK’s leading universities. They are awarded to outstanding established or emerging leaders across a wide range of fields, in particular

  • Education and Health Policy and Administration
  • International trade, Economics and Finance
  • Science, Innovation and Engineering
  • Governance and Human Rights
  • International Relations and Foreign Policy

The programme provides an opportunity for leaders of the future to build a global network and to establish social, cultural, academic and commercial partnerships with the UK. On return scholars can use these links to develop their career and country.

Earlier this year the FCO announced a significant increase in the investment in the Chevening Programme. There is funding to offer considerably more scholarships this year – up to 40 in South Africa and 6 each in Lesotho and Swaziland. We would welcome your assistance in promoting Chevening to ensure that this opportunity is brought to the attention of suitably qualified and talented individuals.

Please direct potential candidates for the scholarship to www.chevening.org for detailed guidance and to apply. The closing date is 15 November 2014.

Please note that when applying for the scholarship candidates must have already applied for three courses at UK universities. In addition candidates must have two years work experience (including voluntary work), during which they have demonstrated leadership skills.

Thank you for your assistance in identifying Africa’s future leaders.

Judith Macgregor

British High Commissioner
