Laurent Thomas is Assistant Director General in the Technical Cooperation Department at FAO. Dairy cooperatives in Afghanistan help stabilize rural communities. Dairy farmers in Afghanistan are forming cooperatives to not only help them earn money, but also to unite and stabilize communities they live in. The UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is assisting them with the necessary funds. The agency believes that cooperatives are key to improving food security and eradicating hunger- even in countries where there is conflict and insecurity.
