But behind the scenes, SA is working hard cementing foreign relations and trade, and, as in many other arenas, is enjoying mixed success. Much attention has been focused on the emergence of the Brics bloc of countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and SA) and the opportunities and risks that this relationship presents. (See FM March 15-20, April 5-10, July 5-10). The pivot towards developing countries raises the question: is SA benefiting as much as it should from its global relationships?
