Its successor promises to place the region on a new developmental path, and also provides a litmus test for the notion that Regional Economic Communities (RECs) should serve as the building blocks for the NEPAD programme as well as an African Economic Community. As such, it provides scholars with an opportunity to confront some of the most challenging questions surrounding regional integration initiatives on the continent.

Recognising this, the Institute for Global Dialogue brought together a range of East African scholars to reflect on these issues. This book contains expanded and updated versions of their contributions. It is hoped that this timely volume will stimulate debate about the development of this important African region, and also help African policy-makers to better understand the challenges surrounding continental integration.
