The Institute for Global Dialogue and the South African BRICS Think Tank
Cordially invite you to a Symposium titled

Development Financing from the Global South: The BRICS New Development Bank

The following symposium uses the BRICS New Development Bank as a window providing insights into development finance from the global South, especially since its creation as a legal entity in 2015. While still new to providing international financing for development projects, it remains important to explore who the key role players are, how BRICS partners perceive their roles as contributors and recipients, and what projects have been agreed upon; where South Africa fits in this context, namely: what it has committed to, and what it can realistically expect? The dialogue will also raise questions on China’s involvement and priorities; indeed, while China is a leading funder of the bank, their interests are also vested in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which may be more strategic for them. The symposium will also consider other mechanisms that will complement the BRICS Bank such as blended finance.
